The School of Human and Social Sciences (ECHS) at the University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro (UTAD) is an academic unit dedicated to the advancement of knowledge in the fields of humanities and social sciences.
Its primary mission is to produce, disseminate, and apply knowledge within these vital areas, playing a crucial role in fostering values such as creativity, innovation, reflexivity, and critical thinking. These pillars are considered essential for sustainable development and the overall well-being of society.
The ECHS structure incorporates diverse departments, ensuring a transdisciplinary and comprehensive approach. Its departments include:
- Economics, Sociology and Management
- Education and Psychology
- Literature, Arts and Communication
ECHS faculty members perform a dual and fundamental role: in addition to their teaching responsibilities, they are actively engaged in scientific research. They conduct robust work within research centres directly anchored at UTAD, such as the
Centre for Transdisciplinary Studies for Development (CETRAD) and the
Centre for Literature Studies (CEL). Many of these researchers also collaborate with other national research centres associated with various Portuguese universities.
The strong involvement of faculty in academic, artistic, and cultural projects and activities demonstrates ECHS's commitment to university outreach to the community. This original vocation of the University is actively fulfilled, allowing the knowledge generated and skills developed at the School to have a direct and positive impact on society, reinforcing the relevance and reach of its actions. The ECHS thus stands out for its multifaceted contribution to intellectual and social progress.
